The course record at the Mt. Washington Hillclimb, one of Americas oldest auto races, was smashed today in convincing fashion by professional rally driver David Higgins at the wheel of a Vermont SportsCar prepared 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Higgins, from the Isle of Man, broke the course record, which stood for thirteen years, by over thirty seconds at the revived ‘Climb to the Clouds’, which was last held in 2001. The new time to beat to the summit of the 7.6 mile sinuous asphalt and gravel Mt. Washington Auto Rd. is 6 minutes and 11.54 seconds, nearly thirty seconds faster than the outgoing record. The Climb to the Clouds featured nearly seventy competitors driving an eclectic mix of modern rally cars, purpose built hillclimb cars and a small group of vintage racecars steeped in motorsports history.

Weather conditions had been less than ideal throughout the two practice days on Friday and Saturday, with intermittent rain showers that blanketed the Auto Road in clouds. The weather kept the competitors from having a chance to practice on the upper half of the course thus adding to the challenge. On Sunday however the weather cleared and two full course timed runs were held, although dense fog engulfed the summit for parts of the day.

Higgins was the last driver to launch off the start line which helped to build the anticipation of a possible record breaking run amongst the fans in attendance. Higgins set a blistering pace on his first run, breaking the record by over twenty seconds, but had even more speed on tap on his second run where he lowered his new record by a further eight seconds. The previous record of 6 minutes and 41.99 seconds was set by Mt. Washington Hillclimb ace Frank Sprongl in 1998.

David Higgins - sliding through Cragway - 2011 Subaru STI - pLars Gange

“It was a very big challenge because the road was still wet in spots and would turn very slick suddenly. With the clouds the visibility was so low I could hardly see past the hood of my car,” explained Higgins. “Our Subaru is setup perfectly for a road like this but I have never raced here before and it was a lot of work to try to learn the course. It’s fantastic to have the record at such a prestigious event.”

In second place was Todd Cook of Tempe, Arizona in an open-wheeled TCE/Wells Coyote hillclimb car and in third place was Paul Tingaud in his crowd favorite Audi “Super Chicken” Hillclimb Special. Tingaud held off former Mt. Washington Hillclimb record holder Paul Choiniere, driving a Hyundai Tiburon all-wheel-drive rally car, by just one-second for the final podium position.

A new speed record of 114mph, measured at the Quarter Mile section of the course, was attained by veteran hillclimber Jerry Driscoll at the wheel of “The Patriot”, his bespoke hillclimb car. Driscoll, of East Randolph, Vermont, set the outgoing Speed Record of 113mph on the Mt. Washington Auto Rd. course in 1998 driving the very same car.

The Mt. Washington Auto Road welcomed for the first time a truck to race up its narrow serpentine course as daredevil Mike Ryan of Santa Clarita, California raced his purpose-built Freightliner Cascadia race-truck, with an amazing 1,950HP, in the Hillclimb Special Class. Ryan was an impressive 27th Overall and commented that, “it was a terrifying and challenging ride to the top and at the finish I truly felt like I accomplished something.”

Winning the all-wheel-drive Rally class (R1) was Robert Martai with his co-driver Fabian Sannet in their 2008 Mitsubishi Evo X. While the two-wheel drive (R2) class was won by local rally driver Chris Duplessis and his co-driver Sarah Trask, both of Littleton, New Hampshire in their 2011 Ford Fiesta.

Of the four Hillclimb classes, meant for regional hillclimb racers and their cars, the Hillclimb-1 class was won by Sherman Baumen, while the Hillclimb-2 class was won by Jamie Melhuish in his 2003 BMW M3. Melhuish, of Newtonville, Massachusetts finished an impressive 7th Overall. The Hillclimb-3 class was won by Tim Mather in a Nissan Sentra and the Hillclimb-4 class was won by Nick Wheelock at the wheel of his 2004 Subaru STI.

The Vintage Class featured a lineup of prestigious racing cars from the 1930′s and 1950′s. Although all the entered vehicles are steeped in motorsports history none as much so as an extremely rare 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 that won Le Mans with legendary Grand Prix driver Tazio Nuvolari at the wheel. The 8C was shipped across the Atlantic, and in 1937 it raced and won the Mt. Washington Hillclimb. It was raced on Sunday by current owner Peter Sachs. Also competing was a 1934 Reuter Special known as “The Old Grey Mare,” and a 1951 Jaguar XK120 known as “The Beast” which Sherwood Johnston piloted in the 1953 to a record-breaking run of 10 minutes, 47.6 seconds. The Vintage Class roster also featured a 1931 Studebaker factory Indy car, one of only three that were built, that won the pole at the 1931 Indianapolis 500 as well as raced and won the Pikes Peak Hillclimb the same year.

About the Mt. Washington “Climb to the Clouds” Hillclimb:

First opened in 1861 as the Mt. Washington Carriage Road, the Mt. Washington Auto Road, located in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire is the country’s oldest man-made attraction. The 7.6 mile Mt. Washington Auto Road is one of the ultimate challenges for driver and automobile. The serpentine tarmac and gravel road is lined with trees and dramatic drop-offs as it winds its way to the 6,288 foot summit of the Northeast’s tallest peak. Considered to be one of the oldest motorsports events in the United States, the Climb to the Clouds was first run in 1904, seven years before the first 500-mile race at the Brickyard in Indianapolis and twelve years prior to the inaugural Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in Colorado. The last time the Climb to the Clouds was run was in 2001.

Organized by Vermont SportsCar and sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire, the 2011 Mt. Washington Hillclimb served as one of several events to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Washington Auto Road as the nation’s oldest man-made attraction.

David Higgins made Mt. Washington Climb to the Clouds History as he crossed the line in 6 minutes 19 seconds during his first full-length timed run of Sunday morning. Higgins was just over a second faster than his Subaru Rally Team USA teammate Travis Pastrana who ran the Mt. Washington Auto Road in a similar car to promote the return of the hillclimb last fall. The prior record set by Frank Sprongl in 1998 is 6:41.99 and has stood for 13 years.

Jon Kemp followed at 7:06.82 and Todd Cook has the 3rd fastest time with a 7:07.33, less than a second back.

Speeds increase during second practice day as drier conditions prevail.
Speeds increase as drier conditions prevail, David Higgins sets possible

The second day of practice at the revived Mt. Washington Hillclimb, one of America’s oldest auto races, was completed this morning under improving weather conditions. Competitors, including both professional international drivers and local racers, enjoyed better road conditions after a rainy Friday practice session yesterday. Low visibility at higher altitudes kept the practice contained to the bottom half of the serpentine 7.6 mile Mt. Washington Auto Rd. for a second day. Competitors have been left with no practice time thus far on the upper half of the course. Multiple time rally champion David Higgins remained the pace setter at the wheel of a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Higgins was just over fifteen seconds faster than Todd Cook of Tempe, Arizona in his open-wheeled TCE/Wells Coyote hillcimb car.

Referred to as the “Climb to the Clouds,” the Mt. Washington Hillclimb was first run in 1904 making it one of the oldest auto races in America. It was revived this year to help celebrate the Mt. Washington Auto Rd.’s 150th Anniversary. An impressive 70-car competition field with some of the best drivers and most unique racing cars from around the world are all competing for the “King of the Hill” title.

David Higgins struggled on his first run after the throttle on his Subaru rally car temporarily failed. On his second run Higgins drove flawlessly and reach the halfway mark in 3 minutes 29 seconds, he was 15.8 seconds faster than his closest challenger Todd Cook. “It felt good, but this was our first run in the dry and we can now make some adjustments to the car based on what we learned today,” explained Higgins. “If conditions are right tomorrow things should be very good.”

David Higgins - 2011 Subaru WRX STI p-Lars Gange

If the rapid pace of Higgins and Cook are any sign of things to come then the Climb to the Clouds course record may well be broken on Sunday. The current course record of 6 min and 41.99 seconds was set thirteen years ago by rally driver Frank Sprongl, who withdrew his entry in the competition after struggling to find a suitable race car to drive.

Rally veteran and former Climb to the Clouds record holder Tim O’Neil of Whitefield, New Hampshire experienced a severe engine failure during practice. O’Neil, who was expected to be among the top five finishers, may not be able to make repairs and his participation tomorrow is now in jeopardy.

A tight battle is brewing behind Higgins with Todd Cook, Jon Kemp in a Mitsubishi Evo VI, Paul Choiniere in an all-wheel drive Hyundai Tiburon rally car, and Paul Tingaud in his Audi-powered “Super Chicken” Hillclimb car all posting bottom half times within five seconds of each other. The seventy car entry list includes high-powered open-wheel cars, a vintage class filled with cars steeped in motorsports history and a first for the event; Mike Ryan’s 1,950hp Freightliner Cascadia Race Truck.

Racers will each get two full course runs on Sunday starting at 9am. Results will be based on each competitors’ fastest run. Live results will be posted to www.climbtotheclouds.com throughout the day on Sunday.

Complete day 2 practice results can be found here: http://climbtotheclouds.com/general-info/results/

As the Mt. Washington Auto Road dried, drivers posted top speeds significantly higher than yesterday’s wet weather speeds. Most impressive was Bill Washburn, who passed the trap at 106 mph in his 1989 Nissan/DSG 240RS Maxi E2 - a 22 mph increase over his speed in Friday’s rain.

Washburn, a partner in Boston’s Dent Sport Garage, attributed the increase in speed to “better tires and DSG Maxi aero package. The road was drying out, and I am gaining confidence on the Auto Road, which is still very challenging,” he said. Washburn has his eyes set on Jerry Driscoll’s long standing 113 mph top speed record set in 1997, “we’re still only using low [turbo] boost, so we may be able to find more speed tomorrow,” Washburn concluded.

Second fastest was Todd Cook, the Open Wheel Hillclimber from Arizona, at 103 mph. Todd drives a 2000 TCE/Wells Coyote – a 1,470 lb car with nearly 400 horsepower out of a 3.5 liter Ford V6 SHO engine.

Third fastest was Paul Tingaud, a rallycar technician for rally legend John Buffum on the Rockstar Mitsubishi Team. Buffum’s speed must be contagious - Paul was clocked at 103 mph racing in his own Audi Super Chicken, a hillclimb special built using Audi 5 cylinder 20V turbo engine with a Quattro drivetrain.

Day one practice completed on the lower half of the course in rainy and challenging conditions

The Mt. Washington Hillclimb, known affectionately as the “Climb to the Clouds” is making a comeback this weekend after a nearly ten-year hiatus. The event, one of Americas’ oldest auto races, features a strong 70-car competition field with some of the best drivers and cars from around the world competing for “King of the Hill” honors. The first day of practice, on the lower half of the 7.6 mile Mt. Washington Auto Road, was conducted this morning with Subaru driver David Higgins, from the Isle of Man, topping the time sheets nearly twenty seconds faster than his closest challenger in rainy and challenging conditions.

The entry list includes two of the past course record holders, former and current rally champions, high-powered open-wheel cars, a vintage class filled with cars steeped in motorsports history and a first for the event; a purpose-built race-truck.

“What a road! Really good fun,” said Higgins, who has never competed on the auto road before. “The conditions were really slick and challenging plus I’m still trying to learn the road.” Higgins is driving a Vermont SportsCar prepared Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car.

Former Climb to the Clouds record holder Tim O’Neil of Whitefield, New Hampshire, who last competed here nearly twenty years ago, was sixth fastest on the morning practice session. “I don’t think the auto road has changed much in twenty years but my memory has gotten worse!”

The Mt. Washington Auto Road will see a truck race up its narrow serpentine course for the first time in its history as daredevil Mike Ryan of Santa Clarita, California takes his purpose-built Freightliner 14.7 liter, 1,950HP turbo-diesel-powered race-truck up Mt. Washington in the Hillclimb Special Class. Ryan was an impressive 31st fastest on the morning practice session.

Evening entertainment kicks off tonight with the Jim Devlin Band performing at 8pm on the Climb to the Clouds stage at the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road followed by a Fireworks show. A second practice is scheduled for tomorrow and at 8pm Boston-based TAB The Band, who recently toured the US and UK with the Stone Temple Pilots, will perform on stage. Race day is Sunday where all teams will have two full course attempts to the summit.

Grandstand seating will be available for spectators at the start area while several on-course spectating areas will be available. Tickets and schedule information are available at www.climbtotheclouds.com.

Fans will also enjoy car displays, vendors, food and a beer garden. All festivities are located at the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire.

(June 9, 2011) Subaru Rally Team USA has announced today the entry of team driver David Higgins for famed Mt. Washington Hillclimb. The multi-time British and American Rally Champion will drive the team’s latest specification 2011 Subaru WRX STI and will be one of the strongest contenders for an overall win and a new course record. The 2011 Mt. Washington Hillclimb will be held June 24-26 at New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington Auto Rd.

David Higgins will drive a lightened and more powerful version of his Vermont SportsCar prepared 2011 Subaru STI that he has driven this season in the Rally America National Championship, where he has won three events in a row and leads the driver standings with just one round remaining. Higgins’ Subaru STI represents an evolution of the car that former Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana utilized last fall to unofficially best the Mt. Washington Hillclimb record by over twenty seconds in a filmed test session. Higgins will drive in the Open Class, the event’s premier class which does not allow the use of co-drivers.

“After looking at the video from Pastrana’s impressive run there I know this road is going to be a mega challenge,” explained Higgins. “On notes with a co-driver would be just like a rally for me, but doing it on my own with such a light and powerful car is going to be one of the biggest challenges I have ever encountered. It would be really cool to have that record though, and I plan on going for it! This is likely to be one of the best roads I have ever competed on and I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Mt. Washington Hillclimb, known as the Climb to the Clouds, is considered one of the oldest motorsports events in the United States. The Climb to the Clouds was first run in 1904, seven years before the first Indy 500 and twelve years prior to the inaugural Pikes Peak Hillclimb. The 2011 Mt. Washington Hillclimb will be held June 24-26 at New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington Auto Rd. The 7.6 mile Auto Road is one of the ultimate challenges for driver and automobile, the serpentine tarmac and gravel road is lined with trees and dramatic drop-offs as it winds its way to the 6,288 foot summit of the Northeast’s tallest peak. The Mt. Washington Auto Road’s history goes well beyond just the Hillclimb as it celebrates its 150th anniversary this summer.

Colchester, VT – Officials at Vermont SportsCar revealed the invited driver list today for the return of the legendary Mt. Washington “Climb to the Clouds” Automobile Hillclimb, to be held June 22-26, 2011. The Mt. Washington Hillclimb, known as the Climb to the Clouds, was first run in 1904 and is considered to be one of America’s oldest motorsports events. The 2011 Climb to the Clouds, which makes a comeback after a ten year hiatus, will be a 5-day festival of motorsports with a 75-car competition field filled with some of the best drivers and cars from around the world competing for “King of the Hill” honors. The entry list includes three of the past five course record holders, former and current rally champions, several high-powered open-wheel cars, a vintage class filled with cars steeped in motorsports history and a first for the event; a purpose-built race-truck!

Gunning for overall victory and a new overall course record will be a trio of past record holders. They include multi-time rally champion Tim O’Neil from Whitefield, NH, seven-time SCCA ProRally Champion Paul Choiniere from Shelburne, VT; and current Climb to the Clouds official-record holder and six-time Canadian Rally Champion Frank Sprongl from Ontario, Canada. These drivers all hold records within a minute of each other and will be racing in the Open Class at the Climb to the Clouds.

Other notable drivers going for the overall record include Jimmy Keeney of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Todd Cook from Tempe, Arizona – both of whom will be driving purpose built open-wheel hillclimb cars with upwards of 900 horsepower, but only two-wheel drive. Keeney was the 2nd fastest qualifier at the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb and Cook is a multi-time class winner at Pikes Peak. Two other open-wheeled cars are the 1968 McKee MK8, a Formula 5000-based car raced by Robert D’Amore from Arlington, MA, and “The Patriot”, a bespoke hillclimb car built and raced by Jerry Driscoll. Driscoll, who makes his home in East Randolph, Vermont, set the current Speed Record of 113mph on the Mt. Washington Auto Rd. course in 1998 driving the very same car he’ll be racing this June.

The Vintage Class features a lineup of prestigious racing cars from the 1930′s and 1950′s. Although all the entered vehicles are steeped in motorsports history none maybe as much so as an extremely rare 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 that won Le Mans with legendary Grand Prix driver Tazio Nuvolari at the wheel. The 8C was shipped across the Atlantic, and in 1937 it raced and won the Mt. Washington Hillclimb – it returns this June, restored as it was raced, to compete 74 years later. Also competing will be a 1934 Reuter Special known as “The Old Grey Mare,” a 1953 lightweight special known as “The Cheetah” and a 1951 Jaguar XK120 known as “The Beast.” The Vintage Class roster will also feature a 1931 Studebaker factory Indy car – one of only three that were built – that won the pole at Indianapolis in 1931, as well as raced and won Pikes Peak the same year. All of these historic cars have raced at Mt. Washington before and will return this June!

The Mt. Washington Auto Road will see a truck race up its narrow serpentine course for the first time in its history as daredevil Mike Ryan of Santa Clara, California takes his purpose-built Freightliner 14.7 liter turbo-diesel-powered race-truck up Mt. Washington in the Hillclimb Special Class. Ryan, a Hollywood stunt-driver by trade, holds the current record at Pikes Peak in the Super Truck Class and will forgo the Colorado event this year in favor of the unfamiliar Mt. Washington Hillclimb.

The two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive Rally classes will be headlined by defending Rally America, North American and Canadian Rally Champion Antoine L’Estage in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and Former Subaru factory rally driver Ramana Lagemann from Somerville, Massachusetts in a 2010 Subaru WRX STI. The all-wheel drive class will be a showdown between the makes as five Subaru and five Mitsubishi rally cars are entered.

Four additional classes host race cars which normally compete in the New England and Pennsylvania Hillclimb Championships that include cars from the 1970′s: BMW 2002, Datsun 510, Opel Ascona, Chevrolet Camaro, and even a Triumph Spitfire; the 1980′s: VW GTI, Mazda RX-7, Peugeot 505, Saab 900, and Porsches; the 1990′s Nissan Sentra, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Dodge Neon, BMW M3, and the thrilling 240RS Maxi, and the 2000′s including modern Volkswagen, Subaru WRX STI, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution entries.

The Climb to the Clouds will also host a vintage car show during the event weekend displaying cars and machinery with impressive ties to Mt. Washington. Highlights include the 1904 Orient Buckboard that raced in the first-ever Mt. Washington Hillclimb in July of 1904, a 1907 Bailey Electric from Amesbury, MA identical to that of a Bailey Electric that completed a 1,000 mile loop from New York City with Mt. Washington on its route, and the 1961 Volkswagen with Porsche Carrera power that Bill Rutan from Moodus, CT drove to the overall record in 1961 – 50 years ago this June.
