VOLUNTEERS

NOTE: There will not be a Climb to the Clouds event in 2012, as we look to 2013 to possibly run the event again.  But we are always interested in hearing from potential volunteers!

Be a part of one of the oldest motorsports events in the country!

The Mt. Washington Hillclimb cannot happen without the help of a dedicated group of volunteers.

Volunteer opportunities for the Mt. Washington Hillclimb include the following positions:

Hospitality Hosts

  • Hospitality Hosts will be interfacing directly with our guests, spectators, VIP’s, sponsor representatives and media.  Volunteers in this area should be upbeat and comfortable working with the public – a solid knowledge regarding the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and the Mt. Washington Auto Road is a plus.

    Corner Workers

    • Those interested in volunteering as Corner Workers  will be interfacing primarily with event officials and other volunteers – however, there will also be limited interaction with hikers, spectators, VIP’s, sponsor representatives and media.  Volunteers looking to help in this area should be hearty, have a familiarity with changing weather climates, upbeat and comfortable working with the public.
    • In addition to the above requirements, having a working knowledge of motorsports and the potential dangers involved with working along a race course as well as an understanding of the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and the Mt. Washington Auto Road are vitally important.

      Spectator Area Marshalls

      • Spectator Marshalls will be interfacing directly with event officials, other volunteers, guests, spectators, VIP’s, sponsor representatives and media.  Volunteers looking to help in this area should be hearty, familiar with changing weather climates, upbeat and comfortable working with the public – having a solid knowledge of the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and the Mt. Washington Auto Road is a plus.

      • Duties as a Spectator Marshall will include, but not be limited to; welcoming spectators to specific spectator areas along the race course, keeping an eye on various trail crossings located near spectator areas to ensure safe road crossings for hikers when the course is not “hot”, answering questions regarding the Climb to the Clouds, Mt. Washington as well as the Mt. Washington Auto Road, guide spectators to areas where it’s safe to view the race from and tactfully keep spectators from viewing areas that are unsafe, ensuring the spectator areas are kept clean and orderly at all times and the ability to work comfortably in constantly changing weather conditions.
      • In addition to the above requirements, having a working knowledge of motorsports and the potential dangers involved with working along a race course as well as an understanding of the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and the Mt. Washington Auto Road are vitally important.


      Communications / Ham Radio Operators (must have a current FCC license)

      • Ham Radio Operators  will be interfacing primarily with event officials and other volunteers – occasionally, Ham Radio Operators will also need to interface with competitors, guests, spectators, VIP’s, sponsor representatives and media.

      • Volunteers interested in assisting in this area should be comfortable working in a team format, have as a minimum, a current FCC Technician’s license, appropriate hand-held Ham radios with ample batteries and be comfortable working in changing weather conditions.  In addition to the above, having a working knowledge of motorsports and the potential dangers involved with working along a race course as well as an understanding of the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and the Mt. Washington Auto Road are important.

      • Duties as a Ham Radio Operator will include, but not be limited to; communicating with event officials and other volunteers in a proper and timely manner as required, assisting Corner Workers as needed, a thorough understanding of FCC rules and regulations and a willingness to work in changing weather conditions.

        Media Assistants

        • Media Assistants will be assisting the Marketing Director and interfacing primarily with event officials, other volunteers, competitors and various media representatives – occasionally, Media Assistants will also need to interface with guests, spectators, VIP’s and sponsor representatives.
        • Duties will include, but not be limited to, conducting interviews with event officials, competitors and sponsors, uploading information to the Climb to the Clouds web site, various forums and other social networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Some experience is required and the position may require use of a personal computer or digital camera. Journalism and photography students are encouraged to volunteer for this position.

          Ticket Sales

          • Ticket Sales staff will be interfacing directly with our  spectators, VIP’s, sponsor representatives and media by selling tickets and checking credentials.  

          • Duties will include, but not be limited to; greeting and working with guests, selling tickets, counting and working with money, distributing informational materials, answering questions pertaining to the Climb to the Clouds and the Mt. Washington Auto Road, ensuring the Ticket area is kept clean & orderly at all times  and understanding that weather can always be an issue when working on or around Mt. Washington.

          Maintenance Staff

          • Must have the ability to safely and comfortably lift a minimum of 50 pounds, comfortable working with hand tools and power tools and a working knowledge regarding the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and the Mt. Washington Auto Road is a plus.
          • Duties will include, but not be limited to; assisting with the assembly and disassembly of various tents & staging units, assembly of various inflatable marketing items, assembly and placement of signs & banners as needed, installation of fencing materials, emptying of trash receptacles as needed, moving equipment and signage from one point to another, setting up tables and chairs as needed and a willingness to work in constantly changing weather conditions.

            Parking & Traffic Control

            • Duties will include, but not be limited to; greeting and working with guests, VIP’s, media, sponsor representatives as well as the ability to answer guest questions regarding the event, parking cars, safely directing pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic in designated pedestrian and motor vehicle parking areas, emptying trash receptacles as required and a willingness to work in constantly changing weather conditions.

              Security

              • Security volunteers must be comfortable working through the night, in varying weather conditions, with limited supervision, interfacing in a respectful manner with guests, VIP’s, sponsor representatives and the media. Volunteers working in this area should also be upbeat and have a working knowledge of proper security procedures, the Mt. Washington Hillclimb and the Mt. Washington Auto Road.

              • Duties will include, but not be limited to; greeting and working with guests, VIP’s, media, sponsor representatives, ensuring the base area of the Mt. Washington Auto Road and specific structures & areas are secure as well as the ability to answer questions regarding the event, parking cars when needed, safely directing pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic in designated pedestrian and motor vehicle parking areas when required and a willingness to work in constantly changing weather conditions.
